the flow of creativity (plus some news)

I struggle with putting aside the time to really write and get creative, I'll admit that now. I didn't always used to. A day off work, a quiet Sunday afternoon or an evening free from distractions could all provide an in-the-zone music-writing experience that just might produce a track I was happy with. At the very least I would end up with some interesting ideas that could potentially be shaped into something more if I chose to revisit them.

These days it seems that these times are far fewer than they once were.

While I was perusing the latest blog posts one evening this week, I came across The Hidden Art of Achieving Creative Flow from a blog I read, Zen Habits. The article struck a chord with me since I've been struggling with the aforementioned lack of productive creative time. I get too easily distracted, and find the internet a major culprit in exacerbating that tendency, also.

Anyway, I thought the article was useful and provided some great tips to getting 'in the zone' and then creating. Maybe you'll find it useful or interesting.

In other news, I'm back in Australia now, my adventures in Japan having ended (for the time being.) I had a great time there, and will be back there again one day, without doubt. I have a few gigs coming up, and they all happen to be at parties I really want to to go anyway - Rhythmic Earth, Regrowth and Track 6. Between them all I'm getting to play a variety of sets and timeslots, both live and DJ, which I'm very much looking forward to.

The final tidbit of news is that I have a few new tracks coming out soon... but that's about all I can say for now! It's on a compilation featuring music from other local artists as well. More news soon.

I've been a bit slack posting anything here - and this site is not quite fulfilling the visions I had for it when it was created. Maybe some of the (sparse) content is useful to you, but I'd say at some point I will simplify it and just make it a blog. I think I may have been a little too ambitious...

Have a wonderful day.

dragon dreaming festival 2009

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have a brief holiday back in Australia, in order to attend and play at Dragon Dreaming Festival.

Dragon Dreaming is a festival based very close to Canberra in the ACT. Servants of Sound, along with R.E.G.E.N., have run this festival two years in a row now. Last year's festival attracted under a thousand people, but it was a great turnout for their first year. The festival was very well set up and the decor was amazing.

This year the Electric Power Pole Records crew joined the team for what was to be an amazing festival. The second Dragon Dreaming took place over the October long weekend (3rd - 5th October), hosting a number of local and interstate artists in a diverse lineup playing everything from dub, electronica and folk to progressive, chillout and full on psytrance. Once again the site was transformed with amazing decor, four distinct stages and a thriving market and food area.

I had an amazing time. To me, the vibe was like Rainbow Serpent, only on a smaller scale. The crews involved did a tremendous job to pull it all together, even having to find a way over some last minute hurdles to ensure everything ran smoothly for those attending. More than 1500 people attended the event, smiling and dancing the weekend away amongst a group of like-minded souls.

My live set was on the Saturday afternoon, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was the first outing of my new APC40, and I must say I'm very happy with how it is starting to change my live set for the better. It's finally becoming properly 'live' - something I have been striving towards for a long time.

I uploaded some brief footage of my live set from the dancefloor's perspective to YouTube. You can view the videos here and here.

I've also uploaded a video for my track 'Curving Beams of Light', released on EPP Records a few years ago. You can view the video here, and purchase the track from here.

Well done Servants of Sound, R.E.G.E.N. and Electric Power Pole - Dragon Dreaming Festival is an event to be proud of, and one that I hope to see grow more and more each year. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to attend.

And just to remind you again - if you haven't yet downloaded a copy of my Lellow EP, be sure to do so. It's free - please take it and enjoy!

lellow EP

I'm very excited about this. I've been looking forward to getting some more music out there for a while now and the time has finally come. Comprising of two progressive tracks, the Lellow EP is now available for download!

These two tracks were both inspired by nature on opposite sides of the world. The inspiration for Lellow came from the Australian bush, more specifically Mount Keira in Wollongong, Australia, while Nuuksio was born from visiting the Nuuksio National Park in Finland. Both are trippy melodic progressive and 135 BPM.

This EP is completely free and mastered by Blacklisted Mastering. Please feel free to download and listen to it, share it on forums, give it to your friends, play it in your sets or completely ignore it if it's not your thing ;)

If you enjoy my music and feel like paying for it, you're most welcome to. Please don't feel obliged - this is given freely and you don't have to pay a cent, just walk away with it! The purchased version is no different, it just allows those who want to support me an avenue through which to do so. Individual tracks or the complete EP can be purchased from my music page.

I hope you enjoy the music, and please give it to everyone you know who might enjoy it :)

digital music - greener than a cd

I've been purchasing music digitally for a few years now, loving the convenience of getting a track then and there and being able to choose only the tracks you like from a whole album. I haven't bought a CD of electronic music for about two years now, although I still sometimes buy CDs of other styles of music.

A further great reason for digital rating highly on my list is the reduction of environmental impact and emissions. I remember someone saying to me at one point that it was just as bad, that the electricity used in computers used to purchase, hosting of the files and the internet services related to the delivery used just as much - a complete load of rubbish in my opinion. And it turns out digital is, unsurprisingly, far better environmentally than CD production and sales.

Microsoft have funded a study into the environmental difference between the two. The results are interesting, but unsurprisingly digital comes out in front.

Digital is the way of the future, and certainly a large percentage of the way of now. If you're not already buying music digitally I urge you to give it a try.

After a few months of planning, preparation and content development, sunrunner.me is ready to go. This is just an introductory post to say hi and introduce myself and my new site.

If you don't know who I am, my name is Dwight and I write electronic music under the name Sunrunner. I am from Australia originally but currently spending a year living abroad in Japan. You can read a little more about me and my music on my profile page.

I have been writing electronic music - mainly progressive trance / progressive psytrance - since around 2001. I'm still learning and enjoying the ride - it's quite a rollercoaster at times, but since following your passion is rewarding I get a whole lot of happiness from it. If you want to hear some of my music, you can listen to some samples of my music in the player on the right.

As well as information about myself and my music, you will find resources for electronic music production as well as resources on promoting your music. Hopefully this is useful to someone - I have spent countless hours learning and there are so many great resources out there. I have provided some of the ones I found useful here on this site. Take a look around and maybe something will be beneficial to you. Although there isn't a heap of content at this stage, it will be expanded upon as time goes on.

To close out this brief introductory post, here are some links to popular music and social networking sites where you can find me...
